How to Enjoy St. Patrick’s Day without Breaking the Bank

Published March 14, 2014

have a fun and frugal St. Patrick's DaySt. Patrick’s Day can be one of the most expensive holidays of the year. With so many different festivities, parades, and other events happening, it’s easy to get carried away. Being able to enjoy St. Patty’s Day without spending a lot of money is about as easy as finding a four-leaf clover – it’s rare, but it’s possible.

Goin’ Green – a Little Info on St. Patty’s Day

Did you know that blue was the original color that was associated with Saint Patrick’s Day? The use of green reportedly only started gaining momentum around the 17th century. The whole notion around pinching someone stems from age-old thought that wearing green would make you invisible to Leprechauns (who loved pinching people). Therefore, people would pinch each other to warn them to don something green before a leprechaun saw. It’s odd how some traditions start, isn’t it?

Though St. Patrick’s Day is one of the most festive days of the year, having fun doesn’t have to cost a pot of gold. With that in mind, here are three tips to help you save some green.

1. Stay in and Save Money by Planning a Party at Home

Rather than spending a small fortune going out, why not plan a party at your place? Stay in and save money by planning your own party. Ask everyone to bring their own festive food or beverage, and remember to tell everyone to wear green! A few traditional St. Patrick’s eats include corned beef, cabbage, and pea stew. Turn the party into something of a St. Pat’s Day “favorite beverage potluck.”

2. Look for Events around Town

St. Patrick’s Day celebrations don’t have to be confined to pubs, clubs and taverns. Take a good look for events and happenings around town. These celebrations often include free eats and drinks – or, at a minimum, different food and drink options. These events sometimes start in the morning and carry on throughout the day and into the night.

3. Set a Budget

Out of all the ways to avoid spending a lot of money, planning out a set budget beforehand is the best step you can take. If you decide to hit the town, remember to stick to your budget by only taking a pre-determined amount of money (preferably in the form of cash) with you. Leave credit and debit cards at home to prevent bouncing outside the boundaries of your pre-established budget.
