“Clean Slate” Podcast Episode 14: What to Have on Hand When You Call
Wayne: If someone’s ready to call, or if they’ve worked up the strength to call, they’ve gotten to the point where they’d like to call, they’re motivated to do it–whether they have a little bit of debt, a lot of debt, a little bit of stress, a lot of stress—what information should they have on hand when they pick up the phone and finally reach out, having made that decision to do so?
Juan: It’s funny, over the years we’ve had a lot of community outreach programs, and everyone always asks, ‘What information should the consumer have before they give you a call?’ You know, I’ve always been the type of person who says ‘Just give me a call.’ You don’t have to have anything on hand if you don’t want to, just give us a call and say ‘Hi, I’m in debt, what do you want me to do?’ And you immediately start build that rapport with one of our certified credit counselors. We’ll go over at least some of the basic information that you need to have, and as I said before, with any of your finances, when you start to get down this road to managing your debt, it’s just understanding where you’re at first. So really gather all your information.

This is the main thing I’ve been saying, just gather your information: who your creditors are, the names of the financial institutions, the balances you owe each one of them, your monthly payments, and try to find out what your interest rates are, and maybe next to that put what your status is. Are you falling behind? Are you one month behind? Are you current? And your income, let’s see what your income is. Write down your salary, bonuses, what your monthly obligations are: your bills, mortgage, rent, your car notes and insurance, how much you spend on gas. Also, how much you spend on entertainment, just to give you an idea of what that is, and at that moment just contact one of our certified credit counselors. They’ll gather all of that information, they’ll put it into our system, they’ll find out what your goals are, they’ll see what your interest rates are and they’ll start to come up with a good plan in order to get you out of debt in a short period of time. And of course they’ll save you thousands and thousands of dollars in interest rates.
So yes, just have your most current debt with your creditors, the balances you owe, your household income and expenses, and with that just contact one of our certified credit counselors and they’ll take care of the rest. But if you don’t have any of that on hand, and you just want to get a little more information on the company and speak to a certified credit counselor and say ‘Hey, this is where I’m at with things,’ just pick up the phone and give them a call. It’s that simple.
Wayne: Just to get the ‘feel’.
Juan: Yeah! Exactly. It’s that first step. Once you take that first step, the rest is going to come. Most of our consumers call us two, three or four times because they feel very comfortable with us. So yeah, just pick up the phone and give us a call and we’ll take care of the rest.
