Cutting the Cable: Practical Ways to Save

If you’re looking for practical money tips to help you save without totally sacrificing your lifestyle, you’ve come to the right place. Here are some of our favorite tips for thinking outside the (cable) box!

Cut the Cable

Take a look at your monthly utility bills. Chances are, you’re paying for internet, cable TV and some streaming subscriptions like Netflix.

Our advice? Cut the cable and downsize your entertainment package. If you’ve got internet access, you can connect your TV directly to the web or through a device like Roku, ChromeCast, Fire Stick, TiVo or Apple TV. These will allow you to stream video on your TV from the web. Whether it’s YouTube, Netflix or free programming from major networks, you can almost always find something free to watch online. If you’re worried about missing out on your local channels, there are still indoor HDTV antennas you can purchase that are very inexpensive.

Projected Savings*: $100/month

Disconnect the Landline

Do you still need a dedicated home phone in addition to your cell phone? Many people are opting out of the cost of landlines by leveraging their cell phone plans to the fullest. Many plans offer unlimited texting and phone calls, and family plans help mediate the cost of multiple phones. Unless you have a strong reason to keep it, you could save hundreds per year.

Projected Savings*: $50/month

Carpool or Take Transit

If you live in a metropolitan area with transit access, making the most of these public utilities is a great way to save money. If you live in a suburban or rural community, it may be that you have a friend or neighbor with whom you could carpool. Depending on the size of your gas tank, you could save big by sharing the cost of travel with a friend or buying a bus pass! At a median price of about $50 per tank, you could save a lot!

Projected Savings*: $50/month

Pack Your Lunch

These days, the average lunch out costs more than the sticker price. Think about the time it takes to get the lunch, get back to work, the amount of calories that lunch contains as well as the amount of money that lunch costs you. If you’re dining at a fast casual restaurant, it’s reasonable to say $10 would cover a meal. Multiply that out, and you could be spending (or saving) roughly $200 per month! You could upgrade your made-at-home lunches with the extra cash and eat at your office in style!

Projected Savings*: $200/month

Say Goodbye to the Gym

Exercise gurus looking to make a few bucks would never tell you to stop going to the gym. We’re not saying that you stop exercising. Far from it. We’re saying this — why do you need to pay a gym fee when you can literally run on the sidewalk for free?

Projected Savings*: $30/month

Does it All Add Up?

So, if you take our advice, you could save nearly $5000 per year.  Keep in mind, these are just a few examples. If you put your mind to it, you can save way more than this. Add in a side job and double down on paying off your debts! If you’re behind on your debt payments, you’re not alone. Many people just like you are searching for the answers, and many of them have found help at CreditGUARD.
